Some disturbing news is being reported on Health.com and CNN.com today – women who eat a lot of carbohydrate rich foods, especially rapidly absorbed carbs like white bread, white rice and pizza are more than TWICE as likely to develop heart disease than women who eat less of those kinds of foods. Men are not impacted in the same way.
Lead author of this important new study, Sabina Sieri, of the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, a national institute for cancer research in Milan, Italy, says that only carbohydrates with a high glycemic index are causing the heart damage in women.
Carbs, such as fruit and pasta, with a low glycemic index did not impact the heart in the same way. This means that the increased risk is caused “not by a diet high in carbohydrates, but by a diet rich in rapidly absorbed carbohydrates,” Sieri says. These are foods that cause the blood sugar to spike.
So what does this mean for us women? And how does it relate to weight loss?
The number one thing to always be mindful of when you’re losing weight is your health. Sure, you can eat low-calorie processed snacks all day long and you might drop pounds (although you’re more likely to put them right back on), but at what expense? You put yourself at risk for diabetes, you compromise your immune system by not providing your body the proper nutrients it needs to fight disease and, we now learn, you’re doubling your risk of heart disease. That is a scary statistics.
Empty carbs in very limited quantities is probably okay, but you should avoid them as often as possible, not only because of this new information, but also because they don’t fill you up. If you eat a piece of white bread toast for breakfast, you will likely be hungry again in a matter of minutes. Whole grain? It can keep you full much longer.
Choosing foods that fill you up and curb your hunger sufficiently until the next meal is one of the essential keys to lasting weight loss.
